Broadly
speaking, across the USA, cannabis is referred
to as "marijuana." For the sake of convention,
we therefore use the word "marijuana" in this
article when referring to any part of the
cannabis plant that is used by individuals.
Possession of
less than 40 grams is punishable by up to 90
days in jail and a fine up to $1,000. For
amounts of 40 grams or more the penalties
increase to up to five years in prison and a
fine up to $10,000.Washington

activists, politicians, and former and
current law enforcement officials spoke to
the Washington State legislature in support
(and against) of Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson's
House Bill 1550, which would legalize
cannabis and make it available for retail
purchase in State-run liquor stores.
"Sensible
Washington is the volunteer-driven,
registered political committee that
circulated Initiative 1068 in 2010 and
I-1149 in 2011, each to repeal cannabis
prohibition in the state. With a statewide
infrastructure now in place, including
thousands of volunteers, we are looking to
improve upon our approach to bring true
reform in 2012."
