Broadly speaking, across the USA, cannabis is referred to as "marijuana." For the sake of convention, we therefore use the word "marijuana" in this article when referring to any part of the cannabis plant that is used by individuals.

Possession of less than 40 grams is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a fine up to $1,000. For amounts of 40 grams or more the penalties increase to up to five years in prison and a fine up to $10,000. Washington Marijuana Penalties

The medical marijuana Initiative I-692 was passed by 59% of Washington voters on November 3, 1998. It is codified as RCW 69.51A.
